We caught up with the talented Hiive member Alfie Barker. He is a gifted writer and director of short films and music videos.

Find out how he got started and what handy advice he has to share with emerging filmmakers.

Can you introduce yourself and your creative work/interests?

My name is Alfie Barker, I write/direct short films & music videos. I haven’t been to film school or university so I learnt by going on short-courses like the BFI Film Academy and going to film festivals.

I’m obsessed with stories about people, all my ideas come from things I’ve been told, heard or seen so I guess there’s an element of truth to everything I make. The last short film I wrote/directed is “I WAS 3” which won Best Film at Cinemagic Film Festival and stars Katie Jarvis (Fish Tank).

What are you currently working on?

I’m developing another short film, the idea was originally picked for Creative England’s ShortFLIX last year. It’s a true story about a homeless family that I haven’t been able to forget since I was told, a few years ago… I’m hoping to shoot it this year.

In June I’m going to the Pigneto Film Festival in Rome, they have given me the opportunity to write/direct/edit a short film in 3 days - I don’t speak Italian, so I can’t wait to see what happens…

I’m also working with a local charity, MAP to make a mini-documentary that raises the voices of young people that have been rejected from mainstream education in the UK.

What are your future creative ambitions?

I really want to direct a feature film, it’s one of my life long ambitions.

I’m pitching for music promo’s at the moment, I love to creative freedom and working with different crews. It’s refreshing to have the opportunity to experiment with different ideas I have.

What advice would you give people aspiring to work in a similar creative field?

Ridley Scott recently said that there are “no excuses” for aspiring filmmakers and I don’t think there is. Everyone has a story or at least one they want to share so just DO IT!

I think you would be surprised with how much you can do with no money.
