Ones to Watch: Chris Roe
Published on 14th March 2017
Chris is a Brighton based filmmaker and founder of Oddbod Creations.
Congratulations on being featured as one of Hiive’s ‘Ones to Watch’! Can you introduce yourself and your creative work/interests?
I’m Chris, an animator and filmmaker who is very fond of peculiar and absurd characters. My work tends to fuse computer animation with traditional stop motion and puppetry. I love the warmth and charm of real models, but also the versatility and possibilities of CG.
Before focusing on film, I worked for many years as a CG animator and artist in the computer games industry. Eventually I co-owned a company making stop motion games with handmade models. Our biggest hit called Clay Jam, was BAFTA nominated. Not bad considering it was all plasticine, shot on top of the washing machine in my garage.
What are you currently working on?
At the moment I’m working with a small team on a stop motion feature film. I’m lucky enough to have a generalist role, working across a range of disciplines making puppets and models as well as animating. It’s exciting times with great people and I’m loving every minute.
What are your future creative ambitions?
My audacious ambition is to make a charming family films combining animation, puppetry and live action. I love 80’s puppet movies and practical effects. There’s a magic to the way films used to be made which I think can work brilliantly with a little bit of today’s computer technology.
What advice would you give people aspiring to work in a similar creative field?
Be ambitious and never get disheartened when some things inevitably don’t go to plan. If you’re determined and good at what you do, then there’ll be opportunities aplenty to show the world your talent. When you’re confident with your craft then innovate and put your own spin on things.
