Ones to Watch: Faye Carr-Wilson
Published on 14th March 2017
Faye recently won the Hiive Future Film Festival Award at the BFI Future Film Festival for her documentary 'Venus'.
Congratulations on being featured as one of Hiive’s ‘Ones to Watch’! Can you introduce yourself and your creative work/interests?
I’m an independent filmmaker, mainly working in short form documentaries. I recently graduated from Northumbria University’s Film and TV Production course, where as my final year project I made a short documentary called ‘Venus,’ which centers on a female drag performer.
Since graduating I’ve mainly been touring Venus around film festivals, which has been the most fun experience, and we have been lucky enough to win some awards with it.
What are you currently working on?
I work closely with my producing partner Magenta Sharp, who made Venus with me, and we’re currently working towards securing funding for more documentary projects. We’re both really inspired and drawn towards women in subcultures and communities, specifically communities that are often perceived to be masculine.
There are two films at the moment, existing in those worlds, that we're focusing on, and I’m really hoping to get off the ground soon. One follows a female body builder, and the other would explore the world of female roller derby.
What are your future creative ambitions?
I would really like to be in the position where I can continue to make my own films and eventually work my way up to a documentary feature. Of course to do that you need a certain amount of freedom regarding time and money, so really I hope to keep working at it and be lucky enough to be awarded that privilege.
What advice would you give people aspiring to work in a similar creative field?
To just keep going and make it happen. If you want to be in the creative industry there are so many routes in that you can try and take, and everyone will tell you a different one. But I think if you want to make and be recognised for your own work, you need to find those opportunities and make that happen for yourself, no one else can do it for you.
