Ones To Watch: Loulou d’Aki
Introducing out first Ones To Watch for September. Loulou is a freelance documentary photographer. Read about why she loves what she does and how she does it.
Can you introduce yourself and your creative work/interests?
My name is Loulou d’Aki, a Swedish documentary photographer based in Athens, Greece.
I focus mainly on personal projects which I tend to shoot in film and these tend to focus on youth, identity and freedom.
What are you currently working on?
At the moment I am on assignment on Gotland where I am shooting a military drill called Aurore 17. This is linked to a personal project.
I am working on about the Swedes perception of defense and threats. Also shooting a project on self chosen single motherhood in Sweden.
In addition to that I am hoping to continue a project I began this summer in Afghanistan.
What are your future creative ambitions?
To learn how to make hand made books and to work more on turning my projects into books. My main ambition is to manage to focus on my own projects more and to have the luxury of choosing my projects.
What advice would you give people aspiring to work in a similar creative field?
To enjoy the ride because it is long and hard. There are many moments of despair mainly due to a lack of funds and interest but when it works out, it is such a satisfaction so in the end the hardships on the way are (almost} worth it. I think that if you are about to get into this field, you should think twice.
Seeing as Halloween is around the corner, what will you be dressing up as?
Halloween...hm, thanks for the reminder. It depends on where I will be. I guess I’ll improvise.
