Robyn Winfield-Smith

Profile

More

I am Artistic Director of REND Productions, Associate Director at Omnibus (Peter Brook Royal Court Support Award 2016), & Education Associate Practitioner at the RSC.

I’m passionate about telling stories that ask urgent questions about our contemporary world, and about pushing at the boundaries of what is possible onstage and onscreen. I want to give voice to the voiceless, reimagine the familiar, and challenge convention in order to engage, stimulate & move audiences through truthful, powerful stories that ask what it means to be human.

Last year I spent 5 weeks with Katie Mitchell at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg, having trained at the RSC with Deputy Artistic Director Erica Whyman, at the Donmar Warehouse on Trafalgar Season 2012/13, and at the Print Room with Lucy Bailey. In 2016, I produced & directed the transfer of my bold theatrical experiment, GREY MAN, at Theatre503. I previously produced & directed my ACE-funded HOWARD BARKER DOUBLE BILL at Arcola (2015) & my ACE-funded centennial adaptation of WOYZECK launching multi-arts venue Omnibus (2013).

My debut production, the UK premiere of LOT & HIS GOD at the Print Room in 2012, kickstarted my directorial career, to great critical acclaim (★★★★ “Robyn Winfield-Smith's shrewd, searching production is full of light and dark and boasts a quartet of terrific performances”, Lyn Gardner), following my year as Community & Education Officer at Chichester Festival Theatre.

Alongside my directing work, I am the youngest founding Board member of SDUK & a Trustee of the Directors Charitable Foundation.
