Jingan Young 楊靜安 is an award-winning playwright and screenwriter. She holds a BA (Hons) in English with Film Studies from King’s College London and a Master of Studies in Creative Writing from the University of Oxford.

She was the first playwright commissioned and produced in the English language by the Hong Kong Arts Festival for FILTH (Failed in London, Try Hong Kong). The play text is available from Columbia University Press. Her training as a playwright includes The Royal Court Theatre’s Young Writers Programme (2011), The Hampstead Theatre’s Heat & Light Company (2011) and the Soho Theatre Writers Lab (2015 – 2016).

In early 2016 she received the Peggy Ramsay Foundation Award for Playwriting and in November 2016 she received the Michael Grandage Company’s Futures Grant to write a play on Chris Patten and Hong Kong. Read the announcement in WhatsonStage. In December 2016 she was nominated by the Bread & Roses Theatre for OffWestEnd’s Adopt a Playwright Award and was later shortlisted amongst 6 for the 2017 award. Find a further list of her awards here. She was also shortlisted amongst 500 for the Papatango Resident Playwright Award 2017.

Productions include I’m Just Here to Buy Soy Sauce which was performed at the Camden People’s Theatre, New Wimbledon Studio, Old Red Lion Theatre and the China Exchange. Other productions: The 38th Parallel at The Park Theatre (Script Accelerator Programme 2015) and This War is Familiar commissioned by 1989 Productions and Amnesty International at the Hackney Showrooms in June 2016. Radio includes The Last Day of the Rest of Your Life produced and broadcast by The Roundhouse.

For screenwriting she has won bursaries from BAFTA, BBC, Working Title Films & ScriptFactory UK. In 2016 she was a member of the BBC Writersroom invitation only group London Voices. She is currently working with a script editor on her darkly satirical drama series on the Chinese community in London. In 2017 she was acknowledged for her writing by the BBC and Idris Elba on the New Talent Hotlist 2017.

She is currently reading for a PhD at King’s College London. Her thesis ‘Soho on Screen’ explores the cinematic representations of Soho in British film from 1944 – 1966. Read more about her research here.

She is founder and artistic director of POKFULAM RD PRODUCTIONS 薄扶林道© and regularly commissions new writing from East Asian writers in the UK and China.
