As a lover of all things dark, creepy and weird, illustrator Sprankenstein is our most seasonal 'Ones to Watch'...

Her advice to other freelancers? Fight the fear...because 'dreams don't work unless you do!'

1) Congratulations on being featured as one of Hiive’s ‘Ones to Watch’ for October! Can you introduce yourself and your creative work/interests?

I work under the pseudonym 'Sprankenstein' and I'm an illustrator currently based in Margate, where I relocated from London to. I create playfully sinister work that falls within many industries, but predominately the music and fashion worlds.

I’m very interested in things that are generally dark and creepy…the weirder the better!

2) What are you currently working on?

Currently I am juggling a few projects. What I am most excited about is my upcoming solo exhibition at Urchin in Margate, which will be in November. I am creating a collection of works based on Russian Folklore and Magic Tales. The show is going to be called ‘PUSHKINSTEIN’.

3) Who/what influences your work and where do you find inspiration?

I find a lot of my interests come from stories I read and then day to day experiences. A lot of my characters are based on the people I meet, or see in passing. And then I create worlds around them. While I am working I like to listen to movie soundtracks like Pan’s Labyrinth and anything that Danny Elfman has touched - it’s great inspiration.

4) What are your future creative ambitions? be the next Tim Burton.

5) What advice would you give people aspiring to work in a similar creative field?

Don’t be put off by the ‘Snakes & Ladders’ of working freelance in this field. Some months you will be so quiet that you want to cry and get a ‘real’ job. Other months you will be so jam-packed that you want to cry because it gets too much…It's emotional! But it’s worth it. Dreams don’t work unless you do.
