Ones To Watch: Kemi Sulola
Published on 22nd November 2017
Spark conversation through music.
This is one of the many things Singer, Songwriter and Hiive member Kemi Sulola wants to evoke through her writing and sound. In this one-to-one, she lets us in on what she loves about music, her current collaborations and her future ambitions.
Can you introduce yourself and your creative work/interests?
I'm an artist; singer and songwriter from East London. I love music – I like writing and singing about topics relatable to my life but also telling fictional stories and those of others. That's one exciting element of music – it can be very real and raw but sometimes it can be very mysterious and take you away from reality.
What are you currently working on?
I'm currently working on a few collaborative projects with other creatives. But my main focus is my next solo project, which will be a concept project. It feels long overdue! I’ve started, scrapped ideas and started again, but at the same time I’ve learned so much about myself and developed. I’m now in the process of gathering all my experiences and putting them into new music.
What are your future creative ambitions?
My creative ambitions are to continue to push myself creatively and my songs in the best way I can. I also want to challenge listeners, I want to spark conversations that will come from speaking about certain topics. I'd also like to work with other types of creatives that I haven’t worked with before to create something fresh.
What advice would you give people aspiring to work in a similar creative field?
Follow your path, nothing or no one else’s, no matter how long or difficult it seems. Stay focused on it, love it, develop it, don’t give up on it. You'll develop your authenticity and the right people will latch on to that and support you. So don’t worry, enjoy every step of the process.
