Short film funds every filmmaker should know about

If you're a filmmaker these are some funds you should be aware of, some are open year round and others have short submission windows. Keep up to date with them all and stack that cash for your next short film!

TALKIES HERE FILM FESTIVAL COMMISSION
What they fund: Short films based on or set in Palmers Green. Any genre. 
What you get: £500 and support towards your project as well as a tailored mentor who has experience with your style of film.
Requirements: No Entry fee. Filmmaker must make use of Palmers Green.
When: Their yearly deadline for submissions is October the 4th. 

SHORE SCRIPTS SHORT FILM FUND
What they fund: Short films 3-20 pages, any genre, open worldwide.
What you get: The prizes vary from £5000-£12000.
Requirements: There is a £30 entry fee.
When: Opens years around the 15th of January and closes for submissions early May. 

RANDOM ACTS
What they fund: Short films 3-4 minutes long. 
What you get: The commision fee is usually up to £4000, as well as funding your work will premiere on Channel 4.
Requirements: They take preference over unique pitches involving art, dance, spoken word and animation. 
When: Open for submissions year round.

LONDON CALLING
What they fund: Short films.
What you get: They have 15 awards of up to £4000 for emerging London Filmmakers, you also get a trailored training and mentoring package.
Requirements: London Filmmakers. 
When: Opens yearly, so check back monthly. 

PEARS SHORT FILM FUND
What they fund: Short films that engage with themes surrounding the British-Jewish life, history and culture. Maximum length 10 minutes. 
What you get: They have two £10,000 grants available. 
Requirements: Must be based on British-Jewish life.
When: Open now for the 2018 fund, closing on the 8th January 2018. 

WOMEN IN FILM FINISHING FUND
What they fund: All genres, short or feature length that are over 90% complete and need some extra funding to complete the project. 
What you get: Four £19,000 grants available.
Requirements: Project must be 90% complete, you must submit a rough cut.
When: Open now and closing on the 30th of June. 

NORTHERN IRELAND SCREEN FUND
What they fund: Short films by Northern Irish filmmakers.
What you get: £2250 as an individual or £7,500 as a production company.
Requirements: Must be shot in Northern Ireland, 15 minutes maximum.
When: Open now, closing on the 2nd of June. 

NASA SHORT FILM PRIZE
What they fund: Short films that make use of NASA's video imagery, up to 10 minutes in length.
What you get: This isn't a fund it's a prize that you win for making use of NASA's video footage, the grand prize is £7700, the second prize is £3800 and the third prize is £2300.
Requirements: At least 10% of your film needs to be some of NASA's video footage. 
When: Open now, closing on July 31st. 
Cool Fact: Richard Linklate (the director of Boyhood) is one of the judges! 

PANAVISION NEW FILMMAKER PROGRAMME
What they fund: They support relatively new filmmakers creating short films.
What you get: Panavision gear to create your next short film, they don't specify what you get so they may cater to what you need.
Requirements: Must be a project created in the US.
When: Open year round on a rolling basis. 

SUNDANCE IGNITE
What they fund: They accept completed shorts from people aged 18-24, you receive a free trip to Sundance Film Festival, there are up to 15 winners.
What you get: A free trip to Sundance Film Festival, a year round Sundance alumni mentor and year round support and oppurtunities. 
Requirements: Changes year to year but usually a short film up to 8 minutes in length. Director must be aged 18-24. 
When: Their submissions usually open in August through to September so stay tuned. 

SHORTFLIX CREATIVE ENGLAND
What they fund: They are looking for 18-25 year olds not in full time education or employment. They are hoping to find creatives who have the potential to make great short films for Sky Arts.
What you get: It's a training initiative and 26 filmmakers are chosen to be mentored.
Requirements: 18-25 years old and not in education or employment.
When: Closed at the moment so keep checking back for it opening again soon. 

LSFF WITH TEETH
What they fund: Short films exploring the theme of Posession.
What you get: £2000 production fund, a world premiere at LSFF 2018 and production support. 
Requirements: You must be based in England. The film must be between 3-5 minutes long. 
When: Open now, deadline is the 26th of May 2017 so get applying! 

JAMESON FIRST SHOT
What they fund: Short films up to 7 minutes long around great/unexpected things that can happen when you fear less.
What you get: Dominic West (The Wire) will star in your short film and you get the budget you need to create it.
Requirements: Must be over 25. 
When: Open now and closing on the 1st June 2017.
